Drury Student Is Recipient of 2018 NAC&U Award for Student Excellence

The New American Colleges and Universities are proud to announce that Brian Lanigan of Drury University in Springfield, Mo., is the recipient of the 2018 NAC&U Award for Student Excellence, which recognizes students for their knowledge and experience in liberal arts, professional studies or experiential learning, and/or civic engagement.

Mr. Lanigan, a native of Warrenton, Mo., is graduating from Drury University this spring with a degree in chemistry and a minor in philosophy. He will pursue a PhD in organic chemistry at the University of Texas – Austin. Mr. Lanigan has conducted organic chemistry research both at Drury University and the University of Missouri and served as the president of Drury’s American Chemical Society chapter.

For his submission to the NAC&U Award for Student Excellence, Mr. Lanigan wrote a reflection paper detailing his experience integrating liberal arts, professional studies, and civic engagement and highlighted his chemistry research in which he has synthesized novel compounds and presented at the American Chemical Society National Exposition. Dr. Madhuri Manpadi, an assistant professor in chemistry, is Mr. Lanigan’s advisor. Mr. Lanigan credits her with creating a direct study course on organic synthesis to accommodate the interests of himself and one other student. Click here to read Mr. Lanigan’s submission.

Mr. Lanigan also served as a resident assistant and community assistant on campus and was a member of Drury’s Enactus team. Enactus is a global non-profit organization with selective membership that mobilizes university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders. Through Enactus, Mr. Lanigan has worked on projects benefitting the underserved populations in Drury’s local community as well as Khatguria, India.

“Mr. Lanigan’s significant work in undergraduate research stood out as exceptional among the impressive submissions that we received,” said Keith Koster, an NAC&U Faculty Ambassador from Nazareth College who chaired the awards committee. “He also did a wonderful job of reflecting on the diverse experiences he’s had at Drury and how they have helped prepare him for the future. We look forward to recognizing his achievements in June.”

In addition to Dr. Koster, an associate professor of music at Nazareth College, the awards committee included Heidi Laudien, associate professor of English, Manhattan College; Brad Wile, assistant professor of chemistry, Ohio Northern University; and Jennifer Moore, assistant professor of English, also of Ohio Northern University. All of NAC&U’s member campuses were invited to send one submission for the award.
